Meeting with Lindsay Hoyle in England, Puan Maharani Requests No Discrimination of Indonesian Products

NASIONALXPOS.CO.ID, ENGLAND —The Speaker of the Indonesian Parliament, Puan Maharani, is on a working visit to England. She also met with the Speaker of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom (UK), Sir Lindsay Hoyle, along with a number of other members of the British parliament.

The meeting between Puan and Hoyle was covered in a luncheon at the residence of the Chairman of the United Kingdom’s People’s Council in London, Wednesday, (1/2/2022) local time. Puan was accompanied by the Indonesian Ambassador to England, Desra Percaya, and two members of the Indonesian Parliament, Gilang Dhiela Fararez and Vanda Sarundajang.

At the beginning of the meeting, Puan expressed her gratitude for the hospitality given by Hoyle. During the talking lunch, there were a number of things that were discussed between the parliamentary leaders of the two countries.

“We hope there is no discrimination of Indonesian products such as palm oil to the UK,” said Puan.

The first woman to serve as Chair of the Indonesian Parliament also pushed for cooperation in the development of green technology and technology transfer in dealing with climate change. Puan also requested that the UK make it easier to get visas for Indonesian citizens to go to the UK, including for Indonesian students.

“It is also necessary to develop educational cooperation for the younger generation because the younger generation is an important component in our relations,” said Ex- the former Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture.

According to Puan, efforts to improve people-to-people relations between Indonesia and the UK, are very important. Because it can form the basis of a strong and lasting relationship between the two countries.

Furthermore, Puan supports exchange programs and practical cooperation between the UK and Indonesia in various fields, including in parliamentary relations. According to Puan, inter-parliamentary relations have made a real contribution to Indonesian and British society.

“I hope my visit will continue to strengthen our relationship, and we can direct more strategic parliamentary cooperation in the future,” said Puan.

Meanwhile, Sir Lindsay Hoyle conveyed the need for defense cooperation between Indonesia and the UK. Included in the manufacture of warships.

“The two countries also need cooperation in the development of manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and increased cooperation in the field of education,” said Hoyle.

Before the Talking Lunch event, Lindsay Hoyle invited Puan and her entourage to see the Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs) at the British Parliament Building. PMQs are a special session in the UK parliament which is a constitutional tradition in which the Prime Minister answers questions from members of the parliament.

On this occasion, Puan was present as an observer at the House of Commons Chamber Gallery. For about 40 minutes, she watched British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, who is the leader of the British Conservative Party, receiving questions from members of the UK House of Commons.

Rishi Sunak stood surrounded by members of the Labor Party as the British opposition sat around him. Meanwhile MPs from the Conservative Party sat on the other side. PMQs led by Lindsay Hoyle.

PMQs this time was held in the middle of a mass strike of workers in the UK. One of the hearings between the parliament and the British government was to discuss issues surrounding the handling of the cost of living crisis and the workers’ boycott. (Uchan)
